We had pictured the turmeric in a courtyard at home, and the garden in Tuscany felt even more like ours. Lala kept every auntie exactly where she wanted to be, and the morning never once felt managed.

The morning we kept

They asked for one unhurried morning. Breakfast on the terrace, the lake still grey, and no one collecting the aunties for a photograph until they were ready.

We had been promised Italy would rush us. It did not. The morning stayed ours, and the rest of the week simply followed it.

The henna was not fitted between appointments. The artist stayed, the cousins stayed, and the afternoon was allowed to take as long as the pattern did.

I was nervous the henna would be rushed between fittings, the way it so often is abroad. Instead the afternoon slowed down. The artist stayed, the cousins stayed, and Italy simply made room for all of it.

The sangeet ran late, as a sangeet should. The village had already been walked through the night, so the music did not have to stop for a curfew.

The sangeet ran late, as a sangeet should, and nobody from the villa came to turn the lights down. Lala had already walked the night with the village, so we danced until the cousins gave up, not until a curfew did.

Issue 05 · Amalfi

Five days, one house

Everyone slept in the same house. The week was not a tour of venues. It was one address, five days, and the families never had to be gathered twice.

What we remember is how quiet the pheras felt, even with both families close enough to touch. Nothing important was explained away. The photographs found the moments we would have missed because we were inside them.

The leaving was not staged for a photograph. The car door stayed open long enough for her father to finish what he needed to say.

I had been dreading the vidaai for months, and then it was gentle. We left slowly, the way we hoped we would, with the car door open long enough for my father to finish what he needed to say.
